Steel Disc May Replace Ruptured Disc

Stainless steel discs are in the experimental stage of treatment for ruptured discs in the cervical spine.

Disc disease in the upper, or cervical, spine occurs more commonly in adults over 40, and in most cases it can be treated with medication, physical therapy and massage therapy. When those don't work, doctors turn to surgery.

The surgery to install the Prestige implant is done on an outpatient basis, patients don't need to a wear a brace and recover in two weeks to a month.

Hardware for treatment of the more common lumbar or lower back disc replacement have been in the experimental stages for a couple of years.
