Deep Tissue Defined

About.com has articles that define certain massage techniques, such as Deep Tissue and Pfrimmer's Deep Muscle Massage. Deep Tissue does not necessarily constitute a hard massage--it simply means that deeper layers of muscle are contacted and treated, usually, with cross fiber friction to break up adhesions and restore fluid flow through the muscle.

Deep Tissue Massage is used to release chronic patterns of muscular tension using slow strokes, direct pressure, or friction usually on a focused problem area.

They also have lots of links to other massage techniques.
