A Rate Increase

After five years in practice and a lot of soul searching, I've decided to increase my rates for half hour and full hour massages by $5 a session. I avoided doing this for as long a possible. I have outlined my reasons for increasing my rates. Everyone on my client list will receive a postcard about this change. I hope my clients will understand.

Moving to a new facility last year drove my operating costs up more than I realized. While the number of massages I performed increased significantly over the previous year, at tax time, I discovered I made the same income as the previous year.

About two years ago, our city's local massage school and higher-end salons implemented a rate increase. Consequently, the rest of the therapists in our city went up on their rates as well. I decided not to increase my rates at that time because I did not see the necessity in doing so.

Every year massage therapists are required to take continuing education to stay certified. Many therapist take inexpensive home-study courses which require passing an open book test. For the benefit of my clients, I try to take the highest quality continuing education courses I can find, with hands-on labs that give me real tools for improving my practice. These classes are not cheap and I can only afford to take one per year but I believe they are worth the expense.
