National Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Month

Being in private practice is interesting because of the variety of conditions that people present to me in hope that massage will give them some relief. One of my clients has cystic fibrosis. I use lymphatic drainage to help aid the body in drawing excess fluid from the lungs. I also massage the intercostal areas between each of the ribs and around the shoulders and neck to help ease tension as a result of the coughing.

The following article outlines one boy's challenges and amazingly upbeat attitude about a genetic condition for which there is no cure.

Cystic fibrosis, the disease from which he suffers, sometimes makes him cough very hard, restricts his breathing and all too often sends him to the hospital.

Coughing keeps him up at night. Steam showers and massage sometimes relieve the aches and pains in his joints and limbs. He has good days and bad.

But home became a hospital away from the hospital with daily treatments, long lists of medications, antibiotic inhalers and a vest worn to massage the lungs.

Facts about cystic fibrosis follow at the end of the article. Find a cystic fibrosis care center in your state.
