Many alternative modalities have their roots in folk healing techniques. For example, visceral manipulation was developed out of folk medicine from hill peoples in Europe. A San Antonio news station tested the skills of a Mexican healer or curandero.

We took a San Antonio woman with chronic knee pain to a small Mexican town to visit a local healer known to cure aches and pains and orthopedic problems of all kinds.

Eva's seen doctors for the pain. They say it's arthritis and gave her medication to help with the pain.

He rubs olive oil on his hands and begins to massage her knee. He then tells her to lift her leg. Painfully, Eva follows his orders. Fighting back the tears, she keeps going.
