If you are going to a performance of the Nutcracker this holiday season, realizing how much work goes into making ballet look effortless will make you appreciate the show even more.
Unlike most sports, ballet is all about appearance. It takes work to maintain that level of fitness. Dancers who play Dresden dolls, snowflakes and Snow Kings work on elliptical trainers, run, swim, lift weights, and do yoga or Pilates.
Like other athletes, these dancers sometimes wake up the day after a show with sore knees and stiff backs. That's why most head straight for the tub after a performance. They soak first in a hot bath with Epsom salts, and then take an ice bath. They need plenty of sleep, and the occasional massage helps. Then it's back to work.
