Healing Arts

Toronto's Artists Health Center is a clinic devoted to working with the unique physical and mental challenge of the visual and performing artists.

Physical aches were the primary concern of the centre when it opened in 2002 -- the toxic environment of the painter's studio, the violinist's repetitive-strain injuries, the underfed dancer's malnourished body. But experience has shown that broader issues of financial insecurity, performance anxiety, drug dependency and even the creative need for solitude may be playing just as big a role in compromising an artist's health.

"Artists are constantly putting themselves in a position of vulnerability," says Christine Ardaugh, a Canadian Opera Company flautist who is also executive director of the Artists' Health Centre Foundation, which raises funds to subsidize treatment for needy clients.
