Massage Therapy and Nursing Home Pain Relief

A new study shows the quality of North Carolina nursing homes is improving, in part due to alternative methods of pain relief, including massage therapy:

Sixty-five nursing homes from across the state took part in a study at the Medical Review of North Carolina. The main focus was to reduce patients’ pain.

The idea was to find ways to increase the quality of life and decrease pain using methods beyond pills.

“Be it massage, therapeutic touch, guiding imagery, those types of efforts. These are the types of things this collaborative effort that helped my facility institute and offer to help my patients get better care,” Brian Smith, a nursing home administrator, said.
