Massage Benefits Our Troops

A Marine Corps massage therapist discusses the many benefits of massage for our troops.

According to Stewart, getting a massage "can provide the needed relief from the symptoms of anxiety, depression, insomnia, stress and tension. One of the most valuable psychological benefits of massage is an overall sense of well-being which often lasts for an extended period of time," she said.

In addition to relieving stress, a massage can also relieve back pain, headaches, muscle pain, and some forms of chronic pain.

"It is also frequently recommended for the treatment of minor sports injuries and repetitive stress injuries, and for the enhancement of physical conditioning," Stewart said. Massage encourages healing by promoting the flow of blood and lymph, which relieves tension, stimulating nerves, and stretching and loosening muscles and connective tissue to help ensure elasticity.
