Sometimes It Doesn't Pay To Be Nice

Last Sunday was Mother's Day. It is one of the busiest times of year for gift certificate sales in my office. Inevitibly, someone calls at the last minute to make a gift certificate purchase. I do everything possible to insure that my clients' mothers, wives, and daughters get their gifts in time for the given day.

There are some problems inherent in this premise. Mother's Day always falls on a Sunday. I'm not open on Saturdays (I need a break, too), but luckily the Postal Service operates a half day on Saturdays. I also do not accept credit cards because, well, I'm cheap! I'm reconsidering this policy, however, as more clients arrive without cash or checks in hand and as more out-of-town clients request gift certificates over the phone.

I made an exception to my rule which states I only mail gift certificates once I have received payment in the mail. Now it is Friday and I still haven't received a check for the gift certificate I mailed. I saved face for this client in the short-term but will have to embarrass them later when their mother attempts to redeem the gift certificate.

I am be part of a service industry, and do try to accomodate my client's needs whenever possible. But, please, don't make me send your mother after you!
