Often, the spa experience is a clients' first experience of massage therapy. While women are typically perceived as the consumer of spa services, more and more men are coming in for "work."
"Spas are absolutely mainstream. Everyone is busier than ever before, and they’re realizing they must take time out to recharge their batteries and de-stress," said International SPA Association President Lynne Walker McNees.
Men tend to seek out massage services at spas, but according to surveys, more men - riding on the metrosexual trend - are getting manicures and facials.
However, even with the industry poised to welcome more men into the spas, growth is also coming from children and teens. Oftentimes, they are the ones turning their parents on to the relaxing benefits of spas.
"Mothers and daughters want to come in together or even whole bridal parties. They used to go out and drink, and now they come here and they want pedicures and to be pampered as a group. It is more appealing."
