The Benefits Of Lavender

Lavender is not only beautiful when grown, but has a variety of medicinal uses. The essential oils can be added to massage carrier oils for helping insomnia, inflammation and pain.

The active ingredients of lavender included esters, which are compounds that ease swelling and soreness, prevent muscle spasms, fight fungal infections and prevent scarring. Another of the ingredients are ketones, which are compounds that help to relieve pain, build new skin tissues and reduce inflammation as well as induce sleep. Ketones can be toxic, so lavender oils that contain an amount above 35 percent should be avoided. Also diabetics, epileptics and pregnant women should avoid them completely. Lavender oil also contains up to 50 percent of the alcohol, linalool, which helps to kill bacteria and viruses. It also helps to heal burns, wounds and sores.

I find that lavender oil diluted in a ratio of 10 drops to 30 millileters of carrier oil, such as almond or grapeseed oil, is a great massage blend to help with sore muscles.
