The Hot Springs Experience

The spa experience in Hot Springs, AK is a no frills curative experience for the bargain basement price of $47.

I knew going in that this was not going to be a trendy spa experience -- no New Age music, seaweed wraps or aromatherapy.

Fraught with history, this spa is part of the National Parks system.

Built in 1912, this is the only spa on historic Bathhouse Row -- a National Historic Landmark District and part of Hot Springs National Park -- still in operation. But the tradition of taking the waters in Hot Springs predates the bathhouses by centuries. Indians called this area the Valley of Vapors or the Valley of Peace; they gathered there because it was a neutral site. Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto camped there with his expedition in 1541.

I would like to experience the spa at Hot Springs. Included in the historic district is a museum dedicated to the history of the bathhouses. Other attractions in the area are listed in sidebar of this article.
