Ear-Candling
My coworker offers ear-candling as an added service in her practice. Ear-candling claims to cleanse the sinuses and ears of mucus and wax by drawing impurities out of the ear canal via a suction effect, supposedly created by the flow of warm air inside a hollow candle.
Candling is an ancient technique that involves placing the unlit end of a lit, cone-shaped candle into the ear canal to remove impacted wax and, apparently, infections. The candles, made from strips of unbleached linen dipped in beeswax, are hollow to allow air to circulate. The warmth supposedly creates a light suction effect that draws any impurities out into the base of the candle.
The procedure sounds alarming but, Lengvari says: "It was painless, and I was amazed at the gunk that came out."
"My head instantly felt clearer and my hearing was sharp. Best of all, the headaches ceased."
Ear-candling is suitable for sinusitis, congestion, headaches, wax, migraines, tinnitus, and swimmer’s ear, an outer-ear infection.
