Choosing Continuing Education That's Right For You

I got a massage from a new peer to the industry last week. He gave an excellent massage and I can only imagine how much better he will get in the years to come. He is already considering his continuing education options and was asking me how to choose.

I remember when I first started as a therapist, I would pour over the professional journals trying to decide among so many options that sounded good. I think it's a good idea that this therapist is asking these questions just weeks after receiving his practitioners license.

First, it says a lot about this therapists dedication and conscientiousness about his chosen career. He will be assessing his clients and their needs when choosing continuing education.

Second, being a male therapist in this industry, it is generally harder to get clients in the door. Male therapists who specialize have a better success rate than purely relaxation therapists.

Some tips for choosing a continuing education course include knowing your learning style, find out if your budget allows you to travel and choosing something that you'll enjoy.

Signing up for something only because it is close or cheap doesn’t serve you. You may check off a requirement, but you won’t take anything home to use. Good massage involves not just our hands, but also our spirits—so don’t go somewhere in body and leave the rest of you behind.
