Craniosacral Therapy and Special Education Students

In Livermore, California, volunteer massage therapists help bring out the best in special education students at one school. The therapists perform craniosacral therapy on the students after school, and the effects have been marked.

Dowling teaches a group of communicatively-handicapped fourth- and fifth-graders. Most pupils from her class receive craniosacral therapy — a head massage that involves gentle and light touches.

"When I come in real soft and gentle, I become part of their body and can feel the pulsing of blood coming through their skull," said James Yunker, craniosacral therapist.

Craniosacral therapy taps into the human body's natural healing process by improving the flow of blood and nutrients delivered throughout the central nervous system.

The increased blood flow can open up portions of the brain that have not been functioning and as a result, patients show leaping improvements.
