My Continuing Education Experience: Day 3
Today, I will recount the third day of the Visceral Manipulation class I took last week.
We started the day reviewing the previous day's instruction. We then went over the anatomy of the uterus. In our first lab, we learned to palpate the motility (the inherent movement following the line of embryologic development) of the uterus, and test its mobility in the body cavity.
Following this first lab, my uterus began to cramp. So right as we were gathering for the second demonstration I asked the instructor how we could prevent this from happening. She invited me up to the table to be the demo. This was not my intention, since it is an unspoken faux pas in these classes to "hog" the demo spotlight (this is an opportunity to get good bodywork from an experienced therapist).
The demonstration involved releasing the broad ligament of the uterus in the left side of my body. The last of my low back pain disappeared.
The rest of the class covered the last of the uterine techniques and then moved into the anatomy, function, location, palpation and treatment of the ovaries. I'm amazed at how low in the abdomen the ovaries actually are. The ovaries are to be approached with great care because they are as sensitive as testicles. It is important to do all visceral manipulation with a light touch so as not to hurt anyone.
Working with the ovaries gives us the potential to help with fertility of our clients. The techniques help to unpleat the fascia from around ovary so the egg is not obstructed from reaching the fimbria of the fallopian tubes.
Tomorrow we will finish up with the ovary techniques and the rest of the class.
