Licensing Board Debate in Massachusetts

Do massage licensed therapists in Massachusetts need their own licensing board? This editorial in the Boston Herald makes the claim that a separate board is unnecessary, since massage therapists are currently regulated by the state's Board of Registration of Allied Health Professionals, which oversees physical and occupational therapists and athletic trainers.

Gov. Mitt Romney believes - rightly, in our view - that with a few new appointments, that board is more than sufficient to license and regulate the practice of massage therapy.

But the therapists and their supporters in the Legislature are demanding a separate board - in part to ensure that legitimate practitioners aren’t lumped in with illegal purveyors of a whole different kind of “massage.”
