South Dakota Massage Therapy Regulation Controversy

KELO reports about the controversy surrounding South Dakota's proposed statewide rules regulating massage therapists.

Monday, a meeting was held in Sioux Falls where more than 100 therapists expressed their concerns to the South Dakota Board of Massage Therapy. Under state law, South Dakota massage therapists will soon have to pay a one-time $100 application fee. A the Board, appointed by Governor Mike Rounds, also wants them to pay a $200 licensing fee every two years. The move is in response to a law passed in 2005 that charges the new Board with developing a licensing procedure for massage therapists in the state.
