A Reader Writes In

A reader recently wrote in with a question:

I'M VERY INTERESTED IN DOING SPORTS MASSAGE AND I WOULD LIKE TO WORK IN BASEBALL. ACTUALLY I'M WORKING TO HAVE MY LICENSE IN MASSAGE THERAPY HERE IN FLORIDA. PLEASE HELP ME WITH ANY INFORMATION.

First, I'd like to say that this is a wonderful long-term goal. Please realize that it is very unlikely that you will get out of massage school and be signed up to work on a Major League Baseball team.

Second, get some practical experience. Think about working in a gym or health club where you can get your hands on as many people as possible in an athletic setting. Baseball players do much in the way of fitness training such as running and weight lifting. You may be lucky enough to have a professional ballplayer who works out at your gym. You may be able to create a dialog with that player about your interest in massage and rehabilitating ball players. They may even be able to give you a lead on contacting a club.

Third, volunteer. Look at your community. Do they have a community baseball team? Offer to massage team members for free. Familiarize yourself with the stresses that the game places on the body. Observe how massage does or does not assist with these issues. Keep good notes, ask the players how massage is affecting their game. This will give you knowledge and confidence to discuss the specific benefits of massage on baseball players when you try to sell your skills to a ball team.

No community ball team? Look for little league teams or even T-ball to volunteer your time. Talk to the parents of these kids and have them present while you work on their children. You may win them over as clients, too.

As far a finding and approaching professional team, you are in a good location because many teams have spring training in Florida. Learn as much as you can about massage and baseball. Go to Google.com and type in both key words together and see what comes up. It may give you lead to other therapists who work for major league and minor league teams. Contact those therapists and find out how they got where they did. Who knows, they may be looking to expand their team of therapists and offer to interview you.

Just keep working at it and you will achieve your goals.
