Managing Messages While Out Of The Office

I was out of the office for Thanksgiving week and it was a good thing I wasn't working. It turns out that I picked up whatever "crud" is making the rounds and did not expose many people to the virus.

I arrived back to the office earlier than scheduled so that I could handle a portion of the phone calls that came in while I was out. I had 11 messages but my caller ID identified 35 calls! Between cancellations, rearrangements, scheduling and confirmation, I've already conversed with more than a dozen people this morning.

The phone company has a handy built-in feature that allows me to do away with an answering machine. You pay a little extra for a mailbox service, but it's worth it. They have a time-saving feature that allows you to keep your regular outgoing message and create temporary messages that lets your clients know that you'll be out of your office. With the punch of a button, you can reinstate your standard greeting.

It will take the better part of the week for me to get back into the swing of my work schedule. Vacations can create inconvenience but the time off is necessary to rejuvenate and rest my hands. Don't short-change yourself on vacation time because, in the long run, you'll be shortchanging your clients by not being the best you there is to offer.
