A Funny Thing Happened At The Office . . .

I was consulting with a client who was suffering with low back pain. She mentioned that she has a tilted or retroverted uterus and I told her that might be the source of some of her discomfort. In an attempt to help her with self-care and home maintenance, I climbed on the table to demonstrate a technique.

Many of my readers who are therapists may be familiar with the following tip: Get down on your hands and knees. Drop the upper body down so it is supported on crossed arms while your bottom remains in the air. Yes, this is not a dignified position. Maintaining this position, cough as hard as you can. This encourage the uterus forward into proper position.

Now, I'll admit, as a massage therapist I have low back pain. I try to maintain proper body mechanics, stay physically fit, stretch and keep my weight under control. But I'm on my feet all day. I wake up stiff some mornings. And on my premenstrual days, I get out of bed feeling like I'm 80 years old.

Imagine my surprise when I hopped up on the table to demonstrate this technique and my back made a gristly pop, pop, pop. My client didn't hear it, but I sure felt it. And when I got off the table, I had no discomfort, greater range of motion, and none of the referred abdominal discomfort that I awoke with. I'll be adding this to my morning routine!
