For The Love Of The Game

A typical scenario unfolded at my practice yesterday. A new client arrived with gift certificate in hand. She looks like she could be your sister, but she is far from ordinary. She's a professional football player. Women's professional football was not something I was familiar with until yesterday. And while they are professionals, they do not get a paycheck; they play for the love of the game. I asked her permission to blog about her sport. Check out the league site and find a team playing near you.

I work on many different kinds of athletes: golfers, runners, and equestrian riders--and there is one thing they have in common. Barring injury or a hard training session, athlete's muscles are generally not sore. Being physically fit is the best way to feel good, have good muscle condition and keep excess weight off. Being physically fit has emotional benefits, as well, such as improved mood and sleep, improved self-esteem, and stress reduction.

Though this woman was sidelined with an ACL injury, she was there to relax. She has been through physical therapy, and her knee is mostly healed. However, her injury prevented her from playing this season. Common sense tells her that waiting out a season for a full recovery is better than pushing to get back into the game.
