My Journey With Endometriosis (Part 1): The Background
It started September first. I got out of the house, looking forward to a long weekend with some time to relax and rejuvenate. By lunch time, my back pain was back with a vengeance, making it hurt to stand upright and making me feel a little nauseous.
Actually, my story starts about ten years ago when I strained my back moving a large piece of furniture up four flights of stairs. I was moving into an apartment in preparation for massage school. I tweaked out my left sacroiliac joint and worked the entire year trying to get it back to normal. All through my massage career, I suffered with back pain thinking it was something that just went with the job. However, when I think back, I injured this area weightlifting two years prior to massage school. And what about the night five years prior to that where I was stuck in spasm on my hands and knees for three hours watching my dinner get cold before I could move?
Several years ago, when my OB-GYN suggested that I had endometriosis, I was still convinced that I had a musculoskeletal problem and wanted a referral to an orthopedist. This doctor confirmed my OB-GYN's diagnosis but gave me a sheet of back exercises to try to ease my pain. Like everything else I've tried, from yoga to calisthenics to walking, sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn't.
This week I will be blogging about my experience with endometriosis. I will be sharing information about what endometriosis is, its symptoms, treatment options and my personal experience with the disease.
