Professional Reading
I'm behind on my professional reading. I've got a pile of magazines on my desk that is creating an eyesore and unfeng shuing my office. So, this past week while my schedule was light I've been trying to catch up with the back load.
Part of the problem is that I've got a subscription to three professional journals: Massage Therapy Journal, Massage & Bodywork, and Massage Magazine. And lets not forget the tabloid Massage Today, which I have been receiving free for years and can be accessed online. I think they have improved their content and scope since it started several years ago. In fact, all of them are important resources that support my continued development as a massage professional.
One of the advantages of keeping up with the content of professional journals is the practice building advice and technique discussions which are great sources for continuing education ideas. Another good reason to keep up with professional reading is for situations such as one I encountered last week.
A client called with a gall bladder problem which they wanted me to address during their appointment at the end of the week. Lo and behold, I found a three-part series of articles on gall bladder issues in Massage Today (part 1, part 2, part 3, part 4 to come). I went on-line and printed out the series, along with a good anatomy illustration, and some other gall bladder support info and handed them a packet of articles that they could take home and read at their leisure. Though some of the content in the articles is technical, this client felt supported in their ordeal by my taking extra time to provide this information for them. Chalk up another point for customer service.
