10 Ways To Control Stress

I met with my adviser yesterday. Basically it was a meet and greet session with an emphasis on stress management. I guess this is something faculty and staff have to help manage with their students in light of the Virginia Tech shootings. Not only that, but I expect it is also that this program is challenging enough that, if you let it, school will take over everything to the detriment of your other obligations and relationships (at least thats the warning I got). Also, studying too hard can lead to diminishing returns in retention and burnout.

So, according to Paul J Rosch, MD from the American Institute of Stress, 10 ways to manage your stress are:
1. Set realistic goals and priorities (recognize what you must do first).
2. Organize your time (in line with priorities).
3. Learn to say"NO" (recognize when you're asked to do something stressful).
4. Recognize that some stress is unavoidable.
5. Make a list of stressful situations (so you recognize how to avoid them).
6. Divide the list (what can I control/what can I not control)
7. Use your time and talents effectively (to address stressful situations).
8. Don't waste your energies (in trying to conquer what you cannot control).
9. Don't be afraid to ask questions (solicit solutions, share problems with others).
10. Do allow yourself time out (enjoy personal interests or just chill out).

Some other things I, personally, have learned are essential for cutting down on my stress: eat right, get enough sleep, take time out to center yourself, exercise. These ideas are good for everybody, not just students.
