Massage Student Has Chiari Malformation
I'm learning about all sorts of conditions in PT school. My Neuroanatomy class is most interesting. So I was excited to find an article about a massage therapy student, Caitlin Jackson with Chiari Malformation. Chiari malformation is a neurological condition where the lower brain protrudes through the spinal canal. There is a severe and a mild form. Severe has onset from birth, and the prognosis is usually not very good. Late onset, in the case of Caitlin Jackson, usually result from a tethered spinal cord and can be treated with surgery.
Unfortunately, Caitlin Jackson's story involves a problem with her insurance company not wanting to pay for the surgery. But there is good news, thanks to contacting the media and the governor, her surgery will be covered.
