No Head Traction For RA

Don't do craniosacral occipital base release (head traction) with you Rheumatoid Arthritis clients. The joint between the atlas and the axis (the atlantoaxial joint) may have instability due to the disease and traction is contraindicated.

Traction serves to further destabilize already loose joints. Traction could cause shear and damage to the delicate structures of the brain stem that controls many automatic functions of the body such as breathing. And that could kill somebody.
