California Signs Massage Act Into Law
California has taken it's first steps towards a state-wide massage license. Senate Bill 731 titled The Massage Therapy Act will allow a private, non-profit organization called the Massage Therapy Organization (MTO) to oversee compliance, training, and background checks that will supersede city and county ordinances.
For massage therapists, one of the biggest advantages of the new certification will be the portability of the certification. Right now massage therapists across California have to apply for a license in each city in which they work.
Participation is voluntary at this point. The license will be a two tier level: certified MT with 250 hours of training and licensed MT with 500 hours of training. After 5 years, enough time to grandfather in informally-trained therapists, educational standards will be mandatory in order to participate.
