Health Promotion

Health promotion. We're having an entire course on it this semester. And while we're learning about how PTs are well positioned to influence changes in our patient's lives with regards to wellness, CAM practitioners are in an even better position according to a prospective observational study about Shitasu. Without the restraints of a managed care medical model which acts as a gatekeeper to health access, alternative therapy practitioners have more opportunity to interact with a the general population. According to the report on this study in Massage Magazine, three-quarters of the study's clients received advice on exercise, diet, posture, points to work on at home or other ways of self-care.

Most important from this research is the framework that must be put in place to help these clients make positive changes in their health.

"Supporting individuals to take control of their self-care requires advice-giving within a supportive treatment context and practitioner relationship, with clients who are open to change and committed to maintaining their health. CAM modalities may have an important role to play in this endeavour."
