Run a 5K in Eight Weeks
The UAB Physical Therapy department is sponsoring a 5K race called "Are U ABle" (note the attempt at using UAB in the name of the race) happening on Saturday, September 26, 2009 at the Oak Mountain State Park outside Birminhgam, AL. The purpose of the event is to celebrate National Physical Therapy Month and raise money for research in physical therapy. All proceeds will be donated to the Foundation for Physical Therapy, an organization dedicated to the funding of research related to physical therapy outcomes and interventions. For more information visit The Foundation for Physical Therapy.
If you happen to be a reader who is a runner and near enough to Birmingham, Alabama, USA, and you can participate in the race, please consider doing so in order to support a worthy cause. If you're near by and you're not a runner, but want to participate, we have a 1 mile fun run/walk, as well.
For those who are serious about attempting to run a 5K but aren't in shape for such an event, you can prepare yourself in 8 short weeks (yes, I know that Are U ABle is in just 4 weeks). Geek Dad offers 5 tools for getting slugs to run and hopefully keep running. His first suggestion is an article dedicated to getting couch potatoes running without injuring themselves. Honestly, this looks like a routine that even I can do, especially since I stopped running last September due to a cranky ankle. The article encourages you not to push the routine even if you feel up to it. Wise advice, because the body needs to adapt by building appropriate amounts of bone and muscle to accommodate the added wear and tear.
Give it a try. You may be surprised what you can do. You may find out U Are aBle to do more than you realized.
