Discovery Of An Alzheimer's Gene?
Scientists are claiming they have found new 3 new genetic variants that they believe are linked to Alzheimer's disease. These genetic variants account for about 20 percent of Alzheimer's cases.
One of the new variants is in a gene active at synapses, the junctions between brain cells, and the two others help damp down inflammation in the brain.
I'm interested in advances in Alzheimer's research because my maternal grandmother had severe dementia in later life. So far, it seems, my mother has been spared the same fate. However, that does not mean that some variant of the genetic make-up of Alzheimer's has not been passed to one of her grandchildren. So many studies point to potential causes for Alzheimer's it's hard to know which one's apply to my family. We also don't know for sure whether my grandmother actually had Alzheimer's disease.
So for now, we watch and wait. And we grieve for the families that must cope with this difficult disease.
