Eat Less, Feel Satisfied

I feel like I've been donning my "winter coat" for hibernation season. So I've been trolling the internet for some pain-free ways to drop a few pounds. So far, portion control seems to be the easiest way to lose weight (I have a bad tendency to double up on portions unintentionally).

In my search, I stumbled upon Dumb Little Man: Tips For Life, who blogs about eating less while feeling more satisfied. The concept: eating quality food will satiate you at the same time curbing the tendency to snack. Basic tips from their site:
1) Eat smart fats at every meal -- eggs, walnuts, oily fish (also great sources for Omega-3 fatty acids)
2) Protein is energy dense -- a little bit goes a long way because it takes your body longer to digest.
3) Choose organic when possible -- Food higher in vitamins, minerals, enzymes and antioxidants fills you up more.
4) Eggs are nature's wonder food -- eggs are one of nature's true whole foods. The cholesterol in the yolk is the good kind of cholesterol.
5) Eat healthy junk food -- choose dark chocolate with nuts, well – that’s almost healthy!
6) Drink water! -- those hunger pangs you're feeling may be your body's cry for water.
7) Nuts and seeds -- sign me up! Watch out, those little guys are addictive, so exhibit portion control before you start eating.
8) Eat rib-sticking sauces and gravies -- Many pre-bottled or pre-prepared sauces and gravies are little more than sugar, cheap oils and synthetic chemicals. I've heard enough.
9) Eat slower -- make food and event, but not "all you can eat" contest. It takes 20 minutes for the first bite to reach your hunger center and turn off the alarm. Shovel it in as fast as you can and you may be eating a lot more than you bargained for.
10) Choose food you crave -- hmmm. Sometimes I crave bananas, but this person says if you've been "jonesing" for a snicker bar for 3 weeks, go ahead and give in. Sometimes the build-up just doesn't live up to reality (this is the way I feel about most movies). If it does, remember, moderation.

Hope you find some of these tips useful. Sometimes I get out of the habit of choosing really good, cheap, and easy foods like eggs. Maybe it's time to work those back into my culinary rotation.
