Exercising With Cancer May Reduce Fatigue
Exercise may be good for people undergoing chemotherapy according to a new Dutch study published in the BMJ. Supervised exercise, such as high- and low-intensity cardiovascular and resistance training, relaxation and body awareness, and massage can help reduce fatigue and boost muscle strength, aerobic capacity and emotional well-being.
Fatigue is one of the major side-effects of chemotherapy that is most troublesome to patients. While the study does not find a major improvement in quality of life, authors believe there is considerable rationale for promoting exercise. Even patients in advanced stages of cancer benefited from exercise, a very important finding for those who may be facing end of life issues and the need to tie up loose ends.
