In Chinese medicine, the large intestine is the organ imbued with the emotional lessons surrounding the concept of letting go, much the way that the liver deals with anger and the lungs deal with grief. This time of year creates a perfect opportunity to letting go.
The Thanksgiving holidays give us a couple of days to assess those things in our life for which we are grateful. At the same time, it is the beginning of the Christmas season. Retailers would have you think that it is the greatest time of year to acquire new stuff. But I like to think of those extra days as a time to reflect upon what we really need to make us happy, and consider parting with clutter.
It makes sense to me, throwing out or donating items that others may use (or give as Christmas presents) those things which we no longer need. Not only that, it makes room in our life for new things to come -- freeing, so to speak, space for the new gifts that come with Christmas.
Experience Life magazine has a wonderful article about how culling through our old stuff can bring back memories of the past. At the same time, having too much old stuff can create anxiety and prevent us from having the space to create new memories. Their tips and tricks for documenting and then parting with life's excess can help with an exercise that is freeing rather than guilt inducing.
