Warning Signs Of Heat Illness

Summer is a great time to get out and enjoy the warm, sunny days. However, it's important to know when you've gotten too much heat and what to do to reverse a potentially deadly situation.

You may have heat cramps if, while indulging a passion for the sun (or working outdoors in extreme heat) you develop severe cramping in the hands, calves or feet, and your muscles become hard and tense.

Heat exhaustion is more serious than heat cramps but usually isn't life threatening. You may have heat exhaustion if you experience any of the following symptoms: fatigue, nausea, headache, excessive thirst, muscle cramps, weakness or dizziness, drenching sweats often accompanied by cold, clammy skin, slowed heartbeat, fainting and confusion or agitation.

Heat stroke is another matter entirely. Symptoms of heat stroke are as follows and the presence of any of these symptoms is cause for alarm and immediate emergency medical treatment: nausea and vomiting, headache, dizziness or vertigo, fatigue, skin which is hot, flushed and dry, rapid heart rate (160 to 180 per minute), decreased sweating, shortness of breath, decreased urination, blood in urine or stool, body temperature above 103 degrees, confusion, loss of consciousness or convulsions.
